I personally use blogger and hence I will concentrate on it since I am letting you know what works for me. To create a free blog with blogger, you need a gmail account {a Google mail account} so log in to www.gmail.com click on create an account, fill in your correct detail, then click submit and your new gmail account is opened. Please take note of your gmail ID and password as that is what is required to enable you create a blogging account of your own.
Then go to www.blogger.com and enter your Gmail ID and password in the column for it at the top right hand of the blogger page, then you are on the go to achieving your aim of creating a free blog of your own. You should decide what you want to blog about before your continue here as you will need to fill in details about your potential website. I'll get in touch with you soonest.
